Learning Approach

Through years of practice, we have found that there is no single approach that works for all. We learned through our struggles and triumphs while working with our students, that combining different strategies and techniques from selected teaching approaches and learning principles have resulted in remarkable progress for our students. Thus, at Shine IC, we have taken an eclectic learning approach in addressing the individual concerns of each of our students -- all of which are evidence-based treatment.

In addition to applying behavior analysis in our education approach, we combine different strategies, techniques and approaches to suit what works best for each of our students with special needs which have led us to produce better individualized intervention programs for our students.

We utilize our knowledge and skills based on the following principles and approaches that involve knowledge gained from research of the Treatment and Education for Autistic and Communication related Handicapped Children.

We work on the premise that everyone wants to and needs to communicate. Given the difficulties in expressive and receptive communication skills of our students, which lead to behavioral issues, we strive to foster engagement. We work on developing functional communication as a key to addressing behavioral concerns.

The center-based and community-based programs we implement is usually done in conjunction with our collaborative home-based programs wherein we incorporate principles from different learning approaches into the activities done to meet target goals and objectives recommended and decided upon by the rest of the team.

Our special education intervention however prioritizes incorporating knowledge from the years of research B.F. Skinner and Ivan Pavlov in changing behavior; hence, we apply the science of behavior analysis in managing behavior and learning.

We work on preventing and reducing Contextually Inappropriate Behaviors while promoting the well-being of the child with special needs. Another key aspect of our teaching approach is generalization as it is a key aspect in learning.

Our teaching strategies basically works on the basis of "Trial by success" over trial and error is key to learning.

We believe that behavior and language are interlinked and so our program at Shine IC is quite language-based.

Aside from working on verbal behavior and language skills, our communication programs specifically work on improving skills that interfere or hinder learning of new tasks or concepts.

Sensory Integration has become a part of our program since Individuals on the autism spectrum frequently have sensory difficulties. Sensory integration therapy has been incorporated into our behavior therapy sessions and special education classes by adding specific sensory exercises into our program in consultation with our experts on board our team.

Our curriculum is developmentally sequenced and targets objectives that are selected to suit each of our student’s individual current priority needs and unique developmental and learning patterns.

Having incorporated into our program principles from the works of several experts in the field of autism and communication handicaps, we have learned through years of practice that what works for some does not work for others. We have observed remarkable progress in our students by utilizing a combination of approaches thus we believe is more effective than choosing an absolute one.

We continue to study and discover new ways to treat the symptoms displayed by our students and continue to develop better and more effective means of implementing what will work for them given their changing needs as they get older.
